Inspired by her admiration for her single father, William Jackson Smart, who raised six children while being a Civil War veteran, Sonora Smart Dodd selected her father's birth anniversary, June 5, 1982, as the day to celebrate Father's Day. Her inspiration came from Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother's Day, who celebrated her own mother.
However, Sonora Dodd faced numerous challenges in establishing Father's Day. Her initial petition to the church and pastor was rejected, requiring her to gather support from local church members. Eventually, the date was shifted from June 5 to the third Sunday of June to allow ministers ample time for preparation. In 1910, the first Father's Day was celebrated, and even after over a century, Dodd's efforts continue to resonate.
