The need for the new Parliament building, spread over an area of 65,000 square meters, is driven by five major factors. According to the project website, the old Parliament has shown signs of crisis and excessive usage over time. The construction of the new building aims to ensure skilled space utilization, a secure foundational framework, the latest communication technology, and structural security and operational requirements.
Limited seating capacity:
Based on the delimitation exercise conducted according to the 1971 census, the current Lok Sabha has 545 seats. The project website states, "The seating arrangement is cramped and burdensome, with no desks beyond the second row," highlighting the security risks associated with limited space for movements. As per the floor plan, the new Parliament will have a seating capacity of 888 seats, capable of accommodating a total of 1,272 seats for joint sessions.
The new Parliament building aims to address the shortcomings of the old structure and provide an enhanced environment for legislative proceedings, incorporating modern amenities and ensuring the safety and security of the premises.
